Switching to Linux

My experience switching from Microsoft Windows to Linux.

Until about a month ago, I didn't know anything about Linux. But my computers have been giving me enough problems over the last year or so, that when I read a post on a forum about it, I started considering it. But the idea had been planted.

It took another couple of weeks for me to act on the idea of trying out the change. I had already purchased an external hard drive a year or so back and backed up my older computer that had most of my pictures and documents on it. It is necessary to backup all information that you want to save as when you install Linux everything will be erased and overwritten, unless you choose to have a dual system. You can reload the files to your computer after you have Linux up and running.

I choose to install Linux Mint on my older computer to test it out before converting my newer computer to Linux as well. I was glad to learn that I could still use OBS as it is a program that I had already been using to make some of my videos. I also found that I could still use Brave and was glad to find that I could save my bookmarks and import them after reinstalling the browser.

I used the Software Manager to install many different screen recording programs. I used them for a few minutes to determine which would work best for me. I picked two besides OBS to try. They both seemed to work the first day, but the next day, I couldn't get them to turn the camera on. I guess that their is some problem that OBS makes the camera unnoticeable to other programs. I retried several other programs, and none would work. I researched how to fix it, but I couldn't make any of the suggestions work. Very frustrating.

I did finally figure out how to make VokoscreenNG to turn the camera on. Working with it a bit I figured out how to use it in the way that I had been using a screen recorder before the switch. So, I believe that the two best programs to use are OBS Studio and VokoscreenNG.
